Selcuk
After our somewhat quickened visit to Ephesus, we got a ride into Selcuk. This is where we were planning to stay but we could only make as far as Kusadasi. The Canadian couple we met at George House really liked Selcuk so we gave it a wander. We started the visit out with apple tea at the leather shop of the man that gave us ride into town. He, unlike most of the leather shops, was very kind and wasn't trying to seduce into his lair to sell us leather. He pointed us, and a British couple who had hitched as well, to his favorite Gyro shop in town. The couple we were with had a yacht and have lived in Turkish waters for quite a few years now. We chatted about the solar panels that were everywhere and can be seen pictured above on the buildings. Everybody has them. They heat the water only but what a wonderful harnessing of energy...and they are affordable. I felt inspired to get them mainstream here in NZ where the sun is hot and lasting....thanks to the hole in the ozone. When we were in Istanbul, we passed a large apt. complex with hundreds of solar panels. It was great.
Selcuk was also home to the Basilica of St. John where he lived for quite a few years before he went to Patmos. We didn't pay to go in but we have this picture.
Right across from the Basilica were these Stork nests. I don't think I even realized that Storks were real...I thought they just brought newborn babies home. Hmmm. There were actually quite a few nests all over town.
