Our wee visit to the quirky Patara had come to and end but it would not be forgotten...mostly because of the burn we got at the beach and the copious mosquito bites that we now had. I have NEVER known a mosquito net to do the exact opposite of what it is meant to do...somehow it attracted them into the net. Hmmmm. I'll never forget Mike saying, after being awoken at 4AM "I know your haunts, I know your hiding places" as he lurked around the room with his shoe above his head. It was insane...worse than camping in a swampy Marsh in Illinois on the Mississippi. Funny thing was we could hear the guys in the room down the hallway smacking away as well. Initially I thought they were having a fight, but who does that and in the morning they told us they had killed 40 inside their net! I still think they were spontaneously generating right there in our room because Mike would have them all and then an hour later.....eeeeEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeEEEEEeeeeeeeeeee. We said our goodbyes to our Turkish mother and father after tasting one last time of her fresh tomatoes, bread, butter, and olives. They gave us some cards to pass around to people we met in Fethiye as they are desperate for visitors. I can imagine Patara 20 years ago as quite the bustling village, I mean with a beach like the one they've got...but now it's struggling, quiet, and doesn't have enough tourism to support all the once busy guesthouses and restaurants. I'm glad we made the detour and find our way out. We started to walk, thinking we would get picked up, but we didn't and walked all the way to the road where the dolmus to Fethiye was meant to go. We waited and waited and finally one did come by and pick us up. 20 minutes into the ride a car began to pass us on the right and signaled to the left so we moved to the right but it swayed back and CRASH we rear ended them and both swayed off the road. It was certainly not our driver's fault but we all waited until the police showed up and eventually another bus came to get us. We got in that one, and I kid you not, 2 minutes later a car was passing from the other direction and very nearly hit us head on. Quite the ride to Fethiye. We passed through some villages we considered staying like Kabak but once you find an out of the way place like Patara, busy tourist villages don't seem appealing. It was a beautiful drive along the red rocked, dry coast. The teal water made such a contrast with the red cliffs. It takes a while on the coast because the road is so windy but well worth the views. So onto Fethiye... but this explains Mike in our room behind the mosquito net that was useless. I don't know that I would trust one of these things from Malaria carrying Mosquitos...
